Is America Divided?
by Jim Stewart, Evangelism Explosion Regional Coordinator for Southern US
Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another
so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
– James 5:16 (NASB)
Our country is in a moral and spiritual decline. We are more divided than ever since the Civil War. Seventy-five percent of Americans do not have a meaningful relationship with a church. Only one thing will correct this decline. Spiritual revival in the church will lead to a moral and spiritual awakening. God is sovereign and brings revival in His time, but usually it comes in answer to the prayers of His people.
Ministry of Prevailing Prayer. Elijah was an ordinary man (James 5:17). He had passions like us. When threatened by Queen Jezebel, he fled. But he was also an obedient man. Over and over the Bible says he “went and did according to the Lord.” We will never be men or women of prevailing prayer unless we are obedient from the core—holy men and women who remind others of Jesus. Do we meet with God every day and let Heaven breathe on us?
Elijah was observant. He saw the world as it was. He stood before King Ahab, saying that he and Israel had disobeyed God in worshipping Baal. Observation leads to intercession. We don’t know how to pray because we don’t see our nation as it is. Elijah saw the world as it was, and it drove him to prayer.
Manner of Prevailing Prayer. Prayer must be fervent and earnest. Elijah put his head between his knees and prayed seven times before the rain came. Prayer must be frequent (Luke 18:1). Elijah prayed according to the will of God, and God shut up Heaven for three and a half years. Prayer must be persistent (Luke 11:5-8). Keep praying until God answers. Pray until God sends revival.
Miracles of Prevailing Prayer. Elijah’s prayers brought miracles. The triumph over the powers of darkness illustrates the vindication of God (1 Kings 18:36, 37). The only way to overcome evil forces is by prevailing prayer (Ephesians 6:12). Triumph over the power of drought illustrates the revival of the church. The triumph over the power of death illustrates the ministry of evangelism and soul winning (1 Kings 17:20, 21).
Throughout church history, God has brought revival to the church in answer to the prayers of God’s people. We will never see genuine conversions and true disciples today without prevailing prayer. Only changed lives lead to a changed society and culture.
The ministry, manner, and miracles of prevailing prayer are for ordinary, obedient, and observant people like you and me. Are you that kind of Christian? Will you prayer fervently for revival of the church in America?
God has promised “the effective prayers of a righteous man (or woman) accomplishes much.” You can help bring revival to the church that will lead to a moral and spiritual awakening in America!
