Sharing in a Secular World posted by John Sorensen on Jan 21, 2019

How do you know God exists? Is there an absolute truth? Can’t we all just be nice people who do good things? If there is a Heaven, won’t my good deeds be enough to get me there? So many people ask these questions, and more, because they really don’t know the answers! Our world is increasingly secular with few moral absolutes governing society. So how do we change this? How can we give an answer to a lost world? Should we give an answer to those who are in disbelief? Of course, but let’s be kind and listen to them!

I met a man on the beach as I was doing EE Questionnaires. I approached him, and his initial reaction was, “If this is part of a church thing, I’m not worth talking to. I’m an atheist.” Well, I told him I loved talking to Atheists, because you can’t be an Atheist without putting some thought into it! He allowed me to continue and when I asked him the main point of the Bible, he said, “do good so you can be good with God!”

You and I both know that’s wrong! I asked if I could tell him what the Bible really says and he agreed. We had a wonderful conversation and he walked away having been told about the grace of Jesus! Second Timothy gives us direction telling us we’re not to quarrel with the non-believer, but we’re to be gentle with those in opposition so that God will perhaps grant them repentance and the gift of Heaven!

We need to be prepared to answer some common questions. I think there is clear evidence to prove there is a God. Every creation demands a Creator, everything of order demands an “Order-er”, and every design demands a Designer. Looking at the world around us easily tells of Someone Greater who planned it all out. An easy way to remember this, if an atheist tells you there is no God, is CODA.

C-O-D-A stands for creation, order, design and art. We can see God so clearly behind His creation, the order He has put into the universe, and everything He so intricately designed -the Artist behind the beauty surrounding us! History shows us that when values replace truth, mankind suffers! Relativism states that the objective standard is unknowable, not-universally applicable, or is entirely useless.

As Christians, we know the truth because Jesus Himself said, ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life and no man comes to the Father except through me.’ ‘EXCEPT THROUGH ME!’ This is the key – if there is an absolute Truth, then there is a standard, or law. God’s Law is completely unattainable, but there is great hope in the grace of Jesus! Only Jesus offers the grace and righteousness needed to come to the Father!

The real dilemma is not in finding your own truth, but being willing to accept the Truth in the Bible! It should comfort you to know that it is the Lord who convicts and changes hearts. He uses us – our story and our lives to bring others to Himself, but it is the Holy Spirit who calls nonbelievers to repentance. Move through this week searching for opportunities to be a light in a world far from the Father. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in conversation and bring to mind the answers you will need.

This is our focus this week at Evangelism Explosion through our social media channels and our daily broadcast. We have resources to help you share and defend your faith online at ShareLife.Today.

There’s a pocket guide called, ‘Reasonable Answers for Honest Skeptics’ that we are giving away. It can help you respond to skeptics with answers you may have not thought of before!

May God richly bless you this week as you’re trained to share the Gospel with our world.
