The Cult of the Next Thing (or…The Doctrine of Stuffology) posted by jwatson on Oct 06, 2014
I belong to the Cult of the Next Thing…
It is dangerously easy to get enlisted…
It happens by default…Not by choosing the Cult…
But by failing to resist the Cult!
The Cult of the Next Thing is the doctrine of “STUFFOLOGY”…
…CONSUMERISM made into a religion!
The Cult of the Next Thing has its own litany of sacred words:
More…Now…New & improved…Faster & more powerful
The Cult of the Next Thing has its own beliefs:
I deserve it…Everybody else has one…It’s on sale!…Charge it…Pay for it later
The Cult of the Next Thing has its own preachers and evangelists:
Advertisers…Infomercials…Shopping network…Celebrity promoters
The Cult of the Next Thing has its own chapels and places of worship:
Malls…Superstores…Club warehouses…Amazon…Internet auctions
The Cult of the Next Thing has its own sacred books:
Glossy catalogues delivered right to your mailbox …Multi-page advertisements in Sunday’s newspaper…All of which are available instantly on the internet – GOOGLE IT!
The Cult of the Next Thing has its own religious experience:
The Spending Spree
The Cult of the Next Thing has its own gospel:
“Crave, covet and spend, for the Kingdom of Stuff is here!”
Then Jesus said to them,
“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed;
life does not consist in an abundance of possessions (stuff).”
Luke 12:15, NIV (Author’s addition)
