50 Years, 2 Questions, Millions Brought to Jesus, Part 1 posted by John Sorensen on Feb 27, 2012

It’s been 50 years since Dr. D. James Kennedy hand-wrote the first EE gospel presentation and had his secretary, Ruth Rohm, type it up (it ran to seven single-spaced pages). He then gave printed copies to his wife, Anne, and four other women with this simple instruction: learn it and be ready to go out the following week to train others to share the gospel.

Evangelism Explosion was being born.

Ruth Rohm was in the audience and among those we honored last Friday night in Fort Lauderdale as we celebrated what God has done in the last 50 years through EE. But we’re not just looking back. We’re also rejoicing in what God is doing right now, and what He will do in the future to bring men and women across the world to Himself through Evangelism Explosion.

EE started in 1962 with just a handful of people in a start-up church using rented facilities and led by a fresh-out-of-seminary preacher by the name of D. James Kennedy. But that pastor had a huge vision and he served an infinite God. Since 1962, millions have learned how to use those two diagnostic questions for which EE is famous to present the gospel with clarity and compassion to friends, colleagues, family, and those they meet in “chance” encounters. Best of all, millions more have come to Christ through EE.

In just the last year, EE trained 324,000 worldwide to share the gospel. And, in the process, we saw, in 2011 alone, over 7.25 million people make a profession of faith!

Here’s something I find even more astonishing, as did Dr. Kennedy when he and I first discussed it some years ago. In the first 15 years of this millennium, 2000-2015, we will see 100 million people come to faith in Jesus! To God be the glory.

And, if the projections of the Evangelism Explosion vice presidents come true—and they’ve been solid for years, now—for the first time in the history of EE, we are going to see our overall cost per profession drop under $1 in 2012. Literally, for every dollar given to EE, we’re going to see someone come to know Jesus somewhere in the world. That’s an amazing thing. I simply don’t know that there is any ministry on earth that is more cost effective than Evangelism Explosion!

I’ll write more in a few days about our 50th anniversary celebration, including what Anne Kennedy told the audience, and an amazing divine appointment shared at the banquet by EE South Africa board chairman Malcolm Thomas.
