Investments can be tricky. The financial markets have recently reminded us of this, haven’t they? “Sure things” were anything but and “impossibly good deals” proved to be just that.

However, there was one guaranteed investment for followers of Christ. In fact, it still exists and is assured by the Lord Jesus himself:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:19-21, ESV).”

Note three things about an investment for eternity:

1. The investment is secure, where “…neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” The common enemies of wealth on earth cannot touch what is laid up in Heaven.
2. The investment is for our advantage: “…lay up for yourselves…” Jesus says that the investment benefits ourselves, not just others. We don’t just give to those in need; we give because we are in need. We are helping to prepare our eternity by supporting God’s Kingdom purposes now.
3. Your heart follows your investment. Most of us get this backwards: we give where our hearts tell us to. But note the order: “…where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Your heart follows your giving. As we allow the clear dictates of Scripture to direct our giving, our emotions will follow.
