Are You a Cynic? posted by jwatson on Jul 03, 2013

I am. And I need the Lord’s forgiveness daily in this area of my life. Cynicism clouds the mind into thinking that everyone has an angle. As Paul E. Miller says in his book, A Praying Life, about the attitude of a cynic:  “Behind every silver lining is a cloud.” Cynicism roots itself in gossip, detachment, and, especially, a paralysis in doing.

If, as a believer, you find yourself sinking into such attitudes, consider praying; taking all of your worries, doubts and fears and leaving them at the feet of Jesus.

Another help is sharing your faith.  While cynicism is passive and merely critiques, sharing your faith is active, engages and is full of hope. It helps you believe in something bigger than yourself. It helps make alive the Spirit inside of you. And even in the dark hours of life, the valley-of-the-shadow-of-death moments, being focused on outreach helps to maintain sanity, and we learn to walk with the Shepherd.
