Dr. Sterling Huston, Evangelism Explosion Board Chairman, Remembered for His Leadership and Passion for Evangelism

(Fort Lauderdale, FL, July 2, 2012)–Dr. Sterling Huston, Chairman of the Board of Evangelism Explosion and a long-time Board member, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 29, 2012, after a bout with cancer. Dr. Huston, 76, became Chairman in 2008 after the death of Evangelism Explosion Founder and Chairman, Dr. D. James Kennedy.

“Sterling Huston was one of the great models of elegant, godly Christian statesmanship in our time,” said Evangelism Explosion President Dr. John Sorensen. “He was a man of strong commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ, and was truly a leader among leaders. After losing Dr. Kennedy in 2007, this man was the great mentor of my life. He was a man Evangelism Explosion was blessed to have as our Chairman of the Board. He will be greatly missed. Our heart-felt prayers are with his wife, Esther and his family as they grieve his passing and, yet, celebrate in the knowledge that this servant of Christ is now rejoicing before His Lord and Savior in heaven.”

A man with a passion for evangelism, Dr. Huston joined the Board of EE in 1989. An industrial engineer after college, he began a long career with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) in 1966. He was the Director of North American crusades for BGEA for many years and most recently served as Director of Special Ministries at BGEA. He was also Chairman of the Internet Evangelism Coalition.

In his remarks to EE’s 50th Anniversary Celebration on Feb. 24, 2012, Dr. Huston spoke with optimism about the future for EE. “We’ve just reviewed the progress of past days and looked to the future and the future is very bright indeed. I would say about this ministry what Paul said to the Philippians, ‘Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ’” (1:6).

Now, for Dr. Huston, as for all who trust in Christ for forgiveness of sin and eternal life, the future is eternally bright indeed. We praise God for his life and for the opportunity to serve under his leadership in training men and women to share the gift of eternal life with others around the world.
