Friendship Evangelism posted by John Sorensen on Sep 19, 2019

There’s a popular myth today that says we have to be friends with someone before we can tell them about Jesus.  The problem is that too often friendship evangelism never gets beyond friendship.  This is John Sorensen, President of Evangelism Explosion International.  Now, let’s unpack this idea.  When practicing friendship evangelism, how long does it take to become friends with someone so that the Gospel can be shared?  Keep in mind that the Gospel must be proclaimed in order for this to be evangelism.  So, does it take a day, a week, a month, six months?  And if we wait until we feel that we’re now friends with the person, what happens if they say, “Why did you wait so long to tell me about Jesus?  I thought we were friends?”  And here’s yet another question.  If we wait until we think the friendship is far enough along to share our faith, doesn’t that mean we’ve decided when it’s time for the person to hear the Good News – instead of the Holy Spirit.  We can be friendly and share the Gospel.  For resources to help you get started in sharing your faith, visit
