When we witness to others, it’s important to understand that saving faith is trusting in Christ alone for eternal life and not in our works. So what is the role of good works in our lives?
Hi, I’m John Sorensen, President of Evangelism Explosion International. Before leaving the point of faith during our witnessing, it’s important to explain the role of good works and the motive for godly living. We do not do good works to gain eternal life. Instead, we do them out of gratitude for what Jesus Christ did for us. That’s when good works are in the right place. Once we receive God’s grace through Christ, good works flow out of that grace because of our gratitude, not because of any earning on our part. So the next time someone says, “But what about the verse that says ‘faith without works is dead’?” You can tell them they’re right but those works just say “Thank you” to God for the free gift of eternal life.
