Should we still use tracts for Evangelism? posted by John Sorensen on Jul 30, 2018
We had a booth at a show at the convention center in Fort Lauderdale with quite a lot of materials on display. And we had a few items, like some tracts that we were giving away for free. Traffic at the booth had been heavy that afternoon so I couldn’t keep up with who took what.
But as I walked toward the meeting hall later in the day, I noticed one of the security guards sitting on a short wall reading our Do You Know For Sure tract. He must have been one of the many that had come by and grabbed one. I went over to him and asked, “Do you understand what you’re reading?” He said, “How can I unless someone explains it to me?”
All of the sudden the story of the Ethiopian eunuch came back to me. Those were the same word the eunuch spoke to Philip on the road to Gaza (Acts 8:26-40). Amazingly, just like the Bible story, this security guard listened carefully to the Gospel and gave his heart to Jesus Christ right there. And it started with a Gospel tract!
Another time, a lady called me to share that she had just given her heart to Christ. When I asked how it happened, she told me that somehow, she had discovered a tract in her grocery bag, read it, and understood the Gospel for the very first time. She called the number written on the back to see if I knew how the tract had ended up in her grocery bag?
Then it hit me. That week, EE had conducted an outreach event in the Bronx area of New York City. I remember a young man, burdened with shopping bags, who refused to stop and talk. When I offered a tract, he took it and threw it into one of the bags and hurried off. Apparently, that bag was filled with this lady’s items. That was a divine appointment! And it started with a Gospel tract!
Why do I share these two stories? Well, many claim that Gospel tracts are not useful in leading people to Jesus. Certainly, one-on-one conversation is the best way to introduce someone to Christ. But God canuse a Gospel tract to lead someone to Christ. Stories like these prove it. And here’s the thing: the best form of evangelism is the one that you will do! So if Gospel tracts help you get started in sharing your faith in Jesus, then go for it!
One word of assistance: when you give out tracts, you can say, “I’d like to give you this booklet if I may. The words in this booklet changed my life! And I know they will be a blessing to you as well!” Then give it to them. Your short testimony makes the booklet more valuable to the person you handed it to.
Where can you start? With a waiter/waitress? A friend? What about with the person who cleans your room at a hotel you’re staying at? Think about it. Pray about it. Then step out and give it a try.
This week, we’re focusing on how Gospel tracts can help you witness. And we want to give you 5 free tracts in either English or Spanish to get you started! Just go to ShareLife.today to get yours.
Pray that God will grant you favor with your friends, relatives, work associates, neighbors, and even strangers, as you join Him in His work of carrying the Gospel to everyone in this generation!
May God bless you as you do!
John
