Step Up to Disciple posted by John Sorensen on Mar 11, 2019

How important is discipleship to you? As a follower of Jesus, it’s vital to both be discipled and to disciple others. We must grow in our faith if we’re going to be effective for the Kingdom.

Forbes.com has an article that talks about mentorship from a secular perspective. Laurence Bradford, a Forbes contributor, says that people who are mentored can benefit from the insights gained through years of experience – without having to spend years of trial and error themselves. She also says that anyone can be a mentor because you can learn from anyone you meet.

How can we apply this to our own Christian walk? Look for someone who you think may need some encouragement in their journey with Christ. Step up and be the mentor they need! Everyone can use a little help and a lot of encouragement, especially to be a disciple of Jesus.

In John 8, Jesus said, “If you hold to My teaching, you are really My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Recently, I was at a conference talking about discipleship. During one of our sessions, a man got up and said, ‘who in this room has spent more than a few weeks in a one-on-one mentorship in the last year?’ Only two people stood. At a discipleship conference! This is our problem! We’re not teaching those around us. Discipleship is not church on Sunday, it’s spending time alongside other believers. It’s life and it’s messy, but it’s so worth it.

Discipleship means digging into and believing God’s Word. You can’t know Jesus more fully without knowing what He says in His Word. Connect with another believer sometime this week over the Word of God. Pick out a verse to discuss, find a Bible study, or pick a question you’d like to see answered in God’s Word and then go over it with your friend. You will grow exponentially alongside another believer!

When Jesus called His disciples, He said he would teach them to be fishers of men – this is the ultimate goal! Disciples bring people to Jesus. Who can you train to share the Gospel? Who can help you grow in understanding of Scripture? Team up with other believers you can help and who can help you and watch as the Lord uses you all for His glory!

This is our focus this week at Evangelism Explosion through our social media channels and our daily broadcast. Visit ShareLife.Today for resources to help you step up and disciple someone.

May God richly bless you this week as you become more intentional in discipleship!
