The Best Way to Love Our Neighbors posted by John Sorensen on Nov 05, 2018

Back in the Midwest, I lived next to a neighbor for five years without ever saying anything about Jesus.  Regardless of what people tell you, it does not get easier sharing the Gospel with someone you’ve known a while — the truth is it gets harder!  After you’ve known someone for five years and said nothing, how do you even start that conversation?

Well, I remember that evening.  Our neighbors had been going through a very tough time. I finally made up my mind to say something.  We got home from a walk, and there was my neighbor on the porch of his house.  I screwed up my courage and walked over.  I acknowledged what was going on and said, “You know, Jesus can help.  He’s the most important person in my life.  He has helped me so much.”

I’ll never forget the look.  Finally my neighbor said, “You’re a liar.  I know every important thing in your life.  When you got a new car, you took me for a ride the first day.  When you got a new BBQ grill, you invited us over that very night.  Now you’re telling me that Jesus is the most important person in your life and you’ve not mentioned Him?  I don’t believe you.”

Well, after I picked myself off the ground, I had to acknowledge that he was right.  I started by apologizing.  Once he accepted that, I was able to tell him about Jesus, and he gave his life to Christ.  It changed everything, for which I praise God.

But I learned an important lesson that day.  There is literally nothing that anyone could say to me today that would be harder to hear than these words on the final day, “Why didn’t you tell me?  I thought we were friends…”

So, now we try.  That doesn’t mean it’s easy!  Sometimes it’s a real struggle to find a way to share with our neighbors.  But we’re intentional to try.

So here’s our question this week:  What can we do to share Jesus with our neighbors?  And the answer is ultimately a simple one:  Be intentional.  But just because it’s simple, doesn’t mean that it’s not hard.

But it is the fulfillment of what Christ told us when He said that we should love our neighbor as ourselves.  How better to do that than to share Jesus with them!

This is our focus this week at Evangelism Explosion through all our channels. You can visit sharelife.today for tips that others have given us that helps them to be a good neighbor, and share Jesus.  Plus, you can request a copy of our “Partners in Friendship” booklet, where you can write down your neighbors’ information and systematically plan sharing with them throughout the year.  That’s sharelife.today.

May God richly bless you this week as you serve Him.
